Biography
Ester Meza Gutierrez and Manuel José Hoyos Toro welcomed a daughter named Ana Mercedes Hoyos Meza into the world on September 29, 1942 in Bogotá, Colombia. Hoyos’ father, an architect, pushed him to major in art history. She finished her elementary and high school studies at Colegio Marymount in Bogotá, where she also took Luciano Jaramillo’s individual art lessons. Travelling to Europe, Mexico, and the United States to study art in various cultures was added to this academic curriculum.
At the University of the Andes, she studied visual arts alongside Jaramillo, Juan Antonio Roda Marta Traba, and Armando Villegas, but he did not finish his studies. Career
Beginning in 1961, Ana Mercedes Hoyos spent the first five years of her teaching career at the University of the Andes. He started exhibiting in 1966, and in 1967 he finished second in the Young Painter’s Biennial at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Bogotá (Museum of Contemporary Art of Bogotá). He won first place in the “Environmental Space” exhibition at the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art the following year.
In the late 1960s, she produced Pop Art pieces, and by the 1970s, she was employing a minimalist style and producing abstract art. His first series, Ventanas (Windows), which many consider to be his best work, was inspired by these.
For more than 40 years, Ana Mercedes Hoyos has produced paintings and sculptures that explore the complexities of Colombian society. Her work has been included in numerous significant exhibitions of contemporary Latin American art.
